BHS Diabetes & Health Management Center

BHS Diabetes & Health Management Center is comprised of certified diabetes educators including dietitians and nurse educators. The BHS team focuses on the American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE) Self Care Behaviors. These activities promote successful self-managment of the disease. They are taught in unique diabetes self-management classes. The classes are recognized by the American Diabetes Association and are held at the BHS East Campus, 127 Oneida Valley Road, Butler.

To attend the class, a physician order is necessary. Many insurance providers and Medicare assist with the cost of the self-management classes. Please contact your insurance company to determine coverage of this benefit.

Diabetes Update Support Group

The BHS Diabetes & Health Management Center offers a support group covering topics ranging from diet and nutrition to what you can expect from your doctor's visit. Diabetes Update is held the fourth Wednesday of every month at 6 p.m at 127 Oneida Valley Road. These programs are free and open to the public. All of the programs are taught by either a registered nurse or dietitian, all of whom are certified diabetes educators.  You may attend any or all of the programs. Registration is encouraged for seating purposes. For information on topics for upcoming support groups, please call  the BHS Diabetes & Health Management Center at 724-284-4374 or email Diabetes@butlerhealthsystem.org

Highmark Wellness Program

BHS Diabetes & Health Management has partnered with Highmark Preventive Services to offer additional classes to encourage the health and wellness of our community. Classes are instructed by the team of educators at BHS Diabetes & Health Management. Call for information on class locations.

The cost of these classes is covered for anyone who has Highmark as their insurance provider.

Highmark Osteoporosis Prevention and Education Program (HOPE), June 7, 1-3 pm - a take-action lifestyle improvement program focusing on making health choices to improve bone health and prevent or manage osteoporosis.

Drop 10 in 10 (A materials fee applies) - September 5, 4-5 pm - an exciting weight management program designed to help participants lose 10 pounds or 10% of their weight through a program of balanced nutrition, sensible activity and meaningful lifestyle changes.

    Discover Relaxation Within I - September 10, 1-3 pm - a lifestyle improvement program that helps you to manage everyday stress through practical relaxation and humor therapy.

    The Spectrum, Begins Monday, October 6, 4-6 pm - a 6 week group based program to feel better, live longer, lose weight and gain health. Based on the best-selling book and research by Dr. Dean Ornish, participants will learn valuable lifestyle changes to help prevent or better manage diabetes, heart disease and other chronic conditions.

    Additional Classes:

    Personal Nutrition Coaching - a one on one counseling service with a Registered Dietitian designed to help you make healthy and nutrition choices for better health or to address specific concerns such as weight managment, heart health and diabetes. Available for adults and children

    Discover Relaxation Within II - a lifestyle improvement program that takes stress management to the next level. Explore additional ways to integrate relaxation, time management, self insight and creative skills into your life. Discover Relaxation Within I is recommended prior to this class.

    Eat Well For Life I - a lifestyle improvement program that champions optimal health, vitality and long-term weight management through good nutrition. Learn meal planning, smart shopping strategies and healthy ways to cook great tasting foods.

    Eat Well For Life II - gives the inside scoop on balanced meal planning, dining out, listening to your body and making the connection between mood and food. Eat Well for Life I is recommended prior to this program.
